RETIRE OR VACATION IN ARIZONA:
SedonaArizona.jpgSedonaArizona.jpgSedona Arizona, home of entertainment and political celebrities such as presidential candidate John McCaine, is an oasis of red rock beauty below an incredible blue sky with billowing clouds. A couple of hours drive from Phoenix this is a place where you can find inner peace when you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city.
.
The Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon area is one of Arizona's most popluar spots for tourism, recreation, retirement and art. Located at the mouth of scenic Oak Creek Canyon and the center of the state's legendary Red Rock Country this area boasts breath-taking panoramas, a mild climate with plenty of sunshine throughout the year and fresh air.
Sedona is the second most visited vacation destination points in the state of Arizona, right after the Grand Canyon. All four seasons are relatively mild. Minimum temperatures range from a low of 30 in winter to 65 in July.  It is centrally located to other cities and tourist destinations-- 2 hours by car from the Grand Canyon and 5 hours from Las Vegas, 6 hours from Santa Fe New Mexico and 7 from Los Angeles.

But the cost of such serenity comes at a high price tag. Retire Arizona in the city of Sedona means you'll be paying prices in the $800K range for a home, and a lot can cost $200K or more.

Summer Jazz festivals keep the locals and some tourists in the groove.  Southwestern and Native American art abounds in myriad galleries, large and small throughout the community along with a variety of restaurants and curio shops.

Some say that Sedona is a vortex between this life and the next so for many it is a very spiritual place. If you yearn for the hot dry climate summers in Sedona offer, and you have a healthy bank account, the Sedona lifestyle awaits you.
.
There are other cities in Arizona that are warm in the winter, and hot in the summer to consider in your quest to retire Arizona. Anywhere in the Phoenix area is a good option. Chandler, Gilbert, Queen Creek, LItchfield Park, Goodyear and Surprise are all affordable with tons of shopping, golf courses, tennis courts, swimming pools (some are so beautiful they look like a resort vacation spot) and other entertainment choices.

RETIRE ARIZONA- THE PHOENIX METRO

Over the past 20 years many have seen the benefits of selling those premanent homes in other states and staying year-round because of all the other benefits Arizona offers them.

Many people don't realize how big the metro Phoenix area is. The City of Phoenix, itself, is the 5th largest city in the country. Geographically, metro Phoenix is pretty spread out. It covers over 9,000 square miles. And yet you don't feel like you're in such a large city...until you try to drive from the farthest point east to North Phoenix or West Phoenix.

Although most neighborhoods are safe, you can find crime in just about every city across the United States. In Phoenix, as any large metropolitan area, some areas are more prone to violent crimes than others. For instance, it's a rather well known fact that the Maryvale section of Phoenix has had more violent crimes than other areas. This area has a reputation for gang activity so contact the police department and get the skinny on any area you are considering. Almost every city in the metro Phoenix area has crime statistics available to you. No matter what city or state you're considering, this is part of your due diligence.

Incorporated Cities and Towns in Maricopa County
Apache Junction (partial), Avondale, Buckeye, Carefree, Cave Creek, Chandler, El Mirage, Fountain Hills, Gila Bend, Gilbert, Glendale, Goodyear, Guadalupe, Litchfield Park, Mesa, Paradise Valley, Peoria, Phoenix, Queen Creek, Scottsdale, Surprise (next to Sun City), Tempe, Tolleson, Wickenburg and Youngtown.

golfingThere is plenty to do for retirees in AZ, including seniors with smaller retirement incomes, taxes are a bit lower, gas is cheaper than California and the east coast, home prices can't be beat, rental properties are cheaper, great medical facilities and doctors, and my auto insurance was reduced $150 a month from the price we paid in the east.

Phoenix is a large city with many self-contained suburbs, many of which are 55 plus communities like Sun City, Sun City West and Sun City Grand if you're thinking you'd like to retire Arizona. On the east side there are 55+ communities also as well as off the I-10 going southeast. Even farther south is Tucson which is loved by many retirees for its isolation and peaceful surroundings but for many it is too isolated and the cost of homes is higher

SUN CITY DAZE
.
We were recently introduced to Sun City AZ, just outside Phoenix where they filmed the reality TV show "Sun City Daze," a program that depicts the "every day lives" of several seniors as they frollic, hot air balloon and find love under the yellow Arizona sun.... and we were amazed at the amenities these communities offer. "This isn't your grandma's retirement community," Jerri, an agent in the area told us. And boy is she right.
.
Depending on the community in Sun City that you choose, there are activities ranging from fully equiped wood-working shops to arts and crafts, swimming, golf, political groups and so much more. You can even store your R.V. for about $200 a Year!relaxing in the pool
.
About an hour south of Phoenix is Tucson and its surrounding communities, also a favorite of the snowbirds but too removed for me. However, if you like to visit Rocky Point MX it's a lot closer. It's also about two hours outside Tombstone and the artistic community of Bizbee.
